India-Brazil strategic partnership spans defence, space, security, technology, and people-to-people relations, strengthening ties across various domains

The ninth India-Brazil Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) held in Delhi marks a significant milestone in the deepening and diversification of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira underscored the expanding scope of bilateral cooperation across multiple domains, reflecting the growing importance of this partnership on the global stage.

The strategic partnership between India and Brazil, established in 2006, has evolved to encompass a wide range of areas including defense, space, security, technology, and cultural exchanges.
Over the years, both nations have recognized the importance of collaborating on issues of mutual interest, particularly within multilateral forums such as the G20, BRICS, IBSA, and the United Nations.

Defense and Security: Both countries have prioritized defense and security cooperation, with a focus on cyber security and space technology. This collaboration is crucial in addressing global security challenges and enhancing mutual defense capabilities.
Trade and Investment: India and Brazil enjoy a substantial bilateral trade relationship, which reached USD $12 billion last year. Despite recent challenges, both nations are committed to expanding trade flows and exploring new avenues for economic cooperation, including in sectors like oil and natural gas, biofuels, and agriculture.
Energy Cooperation: A significant aspect of the bilateral relationship is energy cooperation, particularly in biofuels. Both countries are leaders in this field and have established a strong partnership to promote sustainable energy solutions.
People-to-People Relations: Cultural exchanges and people-to-people relations form the bedrock of the India-Brazil partnership.
Multilateral Engagement: Both countries have a shared vision for a reformed and more representative United Nations, particularly the UN Security Council. Their cooperation in BRICS, IBSA, G20, and G4 reflects their commitment to shaping global governance.

Brazil currently holds the G20 presidency, following India’s successful term. The mutual support between the two countries in this influential bloc highlights their collaborative approach to global economic governance.
Both nations are focused on building a just world and a sustainable planet, themes central to their G20 agendas.

While the India-Brazil partnership has grown significantly, there remain challenges, particularly in realizing the full potential of their economic relationship.
The recent Joint Commission Meeting provided an opportunity to address these issues and explore new areas of cooperation, such as digital governance and sustainable agriculture.
